Luc Duchesne has participated in Ignite Sault since the beginning. He presented the first ever Ignite Sault talk at Ignite Sault 1 back in June 2009 and keeps coming back for more. His talks are always a hit, always funny and always entertaining. In Random Acts of Humour Luc deconstructs things from every day life (where’s the popcorn in popcorn chicken?) resulting in many laughs. Just listen to the track on the video, everybody was bursting with laughter!

Another note on Luc, he really set the tone at Ignite Sault 3 when he warmed up the crowd right before the first speaker went up. He had every audience member practice their cheering skills so that each speaker finished with a lot of supportive cheers. What energy this brought to the room!

Neil McLean did his talk on something he is truly passionate about. Polio. His talk told us how just over 20 years ago a Rotary Club in Indonesia started a project to rid the world of Polio. Now four countries and just a few thousand cases remain. But that still isn’t the end of Polio.

This talk was done by one of the guys behind Ignite Sault, Gerry Kirk.  Because of Gerry, Ignite Sault was the first Ignite event to be held in Canada!  Since Ignite, Gerry’s been planning other events and movements such as Soo PodCamp and soon Change Camp.  In his talk below, he talks about everyday heroes and how you can change your community.

Another key thing about Ignite is that it’s fun. It’s a night to have fun, hear some quick presentations, interact and enjoy.

Ignite Karaoke is one of the fun, interactive activities you can expect at an Ignite Sault event. Introduced in the Soo at Ignite Sault 2, it’s quickly become one of the highlights of any Ignite evening.

It’s not your average karaoke. What happens is, people attending Ignite, who aren’t presenting, can volunteer for Ignite Karaoke (if you put your name in by accident don’t worry! You can just let us know and you don’t have to do it). These brave volunteers are then picked randomly and have to improvise an Ignite talk to random slides they have never seen before. The audience then votes for their favourite, using the “applause meter” app on Gerry’s iPhone (very scientific:)) to decide the winner.

Special thanks again to our volunteer Ignite Karaoke presenters! It’s not easy to stand up in front of a crowd and improvise a talk, especially to slides you have never seen before! We had fun and hope they had fun as well.

A bright future

How satisfying to see so many who signed up to help with the next Ignite (set for October 14, 2010! Mark your calendars!) and to launch ChangeCamp Sault. The Ignite team doubled in size, and ChangeCamp is already in double digits.

Let us know if you’d like to get involved with either Ignite or ChangeCamp. The Ignite team will be looking back and forging ahead, over Indian food on April 21. The ChangeCamp team will hold its first organizing meeting some time next week (week of April 18).

Finally, our presenters have been working hard perfecting their talks.  We got a sneak peek at the technical run-through on Monday night and things are looking good!

Each presenter has a different methodology. Some go up with detailed notes. Some speak with no notes. Rick's doing a little of both. One word cues on flashcards, just in case.

We recently sat down with Dave Brodbeck to find out.  Dave presented a talk titled “Evolution; So simple anyone can misunderstand it” at Ignite Sault 2.
